Doctors Wound Center opened in August, 1997 to offer a full-service treatment program for patients with acute and chronic wounds. Located on the second floor of the West Tower Professional Building on the campus of Doctors Hospital, patients have convenient access to a 232-bed full-service hospital if needed.
Center's Mission Doctors Wound Center's goal is to facilitate rapid healing, reduce discomfort associated with open wounds, avoid unnecessary hospitalization, and lower the cost of care. Avoiding hospitalization and reduced costs may be attained in three ways:
- First, our staff performs a variety of minor wound surgical procedures in the Center that have traditionally required hospitalization.
- The Center emphasizes patient education and wound prevention, while also encouraging patients and their families to participate in the various facets of care to help prevent recurrence.
- Finally, referring physicians are kept informed of their patient's assessment, treatment recommendations, and follow-up care through regular reports.
Assessment of Wounds After a visit at the Wound Center, all new patients and their referring physician receive a comprehensive evaluation of the wound. Assessment criteria include the patient's understanding of and ability to care for their wounds, as well as the evaluation of systemic and local factors that may be affecting the healing process. This evaluation includes many factors such as:
- Nutritional status
- Vascular (or blood vessel) assessment, including local blood flow, as well as oxygen flow and oxygen use in the wound area
- Chemical and immune profile of the wound
Treatment and Follow-Up Once evaluation has been made, the new patient may begin an aggressive treatment program designed to promote rapid wound closure. Aggressive intervention techniques include but are not limited to:
- Surgically removing the wound
- Applying a graft of tissue taken from a donor
- Skin grafting
- Excision of skin lesions
Other treatments offered at Doctors Wound Center are pharmaceutical intervention, evaluation and fitting for muscle supports or joint braces, and referrals for definitive invasive diagnostic testing and surgery. Specialty consultations in the hospital or in a nursing home are available upon request.
In order to monitor the selected treatment, follow-up care is a vital part of the Doctors Wound Center's program. Patient progress is monitored closely and the plan of care is modified as needed. When requested, the Doctors Wound Center also provides coordination of home care services to maintain quality care.
Wound Center Director The Medical Director of Doctors Wound Center is Dr. Matthew Pompeo.
