Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake Celebrates 50 Years
of ‘Homegrown’ Healthcare and a Commitment of Community Caring

To Commemorate Anniversary Hospital Launches
Year Long Campaign of Giving Back to the Community

Dallas, TX- 50 years ago a group of East Dallas physicians founded Doctors Hospital, a community medical/surgical hospital then located on Garland Road near Buckner Boulevard. “Doctors Hospital is a center of excellence that has been serving the people of East Dallas for half a century.” says Dr. Bob Hendler, a gastroenterologist who practiced at Doctors Hospital for 20 years and whose father Albert F. Hendler, MD, was the founding internist on the hospital staff.

The hospital, which moved to its current location on Buckner and Poppy Drive on June 12, 1977, has since developed into a full-service 218-bed acute care facility with three medical office buildings on campus. A medical staff of 591 credentialed physicians with expertise in 56 specialties works in conjunction with an experienced nursing and ancillary staff to provide patients with advanced medical technology in a community hospital environment.

Dr. Bob Hillert, head of Doctors Hospital’s Cardiology Department has practiced at the hospital for over 30
years and continues to serve as a driving force behind the cardiology program.  His dedication has helped Doctors Cardiology Department continually meet or exceed the nationally accepted standards, while constantly improving the quality of patient care through the The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines Program.

“As Doctors Hospital celebrates 50 years, we continue our dedication to making patient care for heart and stroke patients among the best in the country,” says Dr. Hillert.

Doctors Hospital has also demonstrated expertise and met rigorous standards to be named  an Accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers and a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

“For the past 50 years, Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake has sustained the commitment to provide quality healthcare to the communities it serves,” says Mitch Edgeworth, chief executive officer of Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake. “After five decades, we continue to improve and upgrade our full suite of services with new ‘hotel-inspired’ surgical suites, and a brand new women’s imaging center.”

Through a variety of programs that promote health, facilitate wellness and support those with healthcare needs, Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake maintains the commitment to the community that was made 50 years ago. For senior citizens, there is access to the indoor walking track through the Prestige Care Program. For parents, there are classes on childbirth and parenting. For teen athletes, periodic free physicals promote safe sports participation.

As part of Tenet Healthcare Corporation, Doctors Hospital has brought access to the Tenet Healthcare Foundation, which administers financial assistance to not-for-profit organizations in Tenet hospital communities. Doctors Hospital has given to the Dallas Arboretum, Lake Highlands Women’s League, Lakewood Service League, the YMCA and many more.

“For 50 years Doctors Hospital has been the heartbeat of healthcare in our community,” said Gary Griffith, past Dallas City Council member and Doctors Hospital governing board member. “They have cared for many of our citizens with medical expertise, and most importantly, compassion.”

To commemorate 50 years, Doctors Hospital is launching a year long campaign of thanking the community by asking organization for items on their ‘wish list’ then donating in lots of ‘50’, such as 50 sports balls to the local YMCA and 50 backpacks to area schools. Throughout the year contributions will be made to numerous other organizations and charities in the White Rock area.

“As we approach our 50th year of service to the community, Doctors Hospital would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have supported and helped us grow throughout the years,” says Edgeworth. “As the founders intended, Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake remains steadfast in the mission to utilize its resources to respond to the broad spectrum of healthcare needs in the community.”

“The greatest pride in my professional life is working with the physicians, hospital staff, and administration in caring, truly caring, for our community,” says Dr. Hillert.
