Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental consent), weigh no less than 110 pounds, and be in good health. Donating whole blood takes about one hour and can be done every 56 days. No appointment is necessary.
Donating blood is safe. New, sterile, disposable equipment is used for each donor and there is no risk of contracting a bloodborne infection. Before donating, people should maintain a healthy diet with plenty of iron-rich foods, get a good night’s sleep, and drink an extra 16 ounces of water and other fluids. Make sure sleeves can be raised above the elbow. Donors will be asked to complete a confidential medical history, and have their blood pressure, pulse and temperature checked.
After giving blood, donors should avoid strenuous physical activity or heavy lifting for about five hours and drink plenty of fluids for the next day or two. The bandage on the arm should remain in place for about four hours. For more information about donating blood, visit the American Red Cross website at www.RedCrossBlood.org.
