Free EZ-detect Colon Cancer Kits
Friday, 09 March 2012

Colorectal cancer is not a common topic of conversation, but it is a fairly common type of cancer. Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed type of cancer in the United States. To encourage screening for the disease, Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake is offering free EZ DETECT™ colon cancer kits* during the month of March, which is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. For your free kit call 866-764-3627. Limit two kits per household, please. Kits are available while supplies last.

The American Cancer Society recommends that adults be screened for the disease starting at age 50. If you have a family member or personal history that puts you at higher risk for colorectal cancer, you may need earlier or more frequent screenings.  Other factors that may affect a person’s chances of developing the disease include a high fat diet, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, and previous intestinal polyps or chronic inflammatory conditions, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.

“Most people with colorectal cancer do not know they have disease because they have no symptoms until the cancer reaches an advanced stage,” says Kurt Lange, M.D., gastroenterologist on the medical staff at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake. “That is why it is so important to be screened for colorectal cancer. Fortunately, it can be treated when detected early.”

According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 103,000 new cases of colon cancer and 40,000 new cases of rectal cancer diagnosed this year. Colorectal cancer occurs when an abnormal growth of tissue or tumor begins as a non-cancerous polyp on the lining of the colon or rectum. Once cancer begins to develop, it can grow into the wall of the colon or rectum and then spread into blood or lymph vessels.

The EZ-detect kit is simple, sanitary and easy to use in the privacy of home. No lab processing or stool handling is required, and there are no dietary restrictions during the testing period. The test takes only minutes to complete and does not require a visit to the doctor. For more information about your risks for colorectal cancer, take the free, online Colorectal Cancer Risk Assessment on the Doctor’s Hospital at White Rock Lake website at www.DoctorsHospitalDallas.com/ColorectalCancerRisks.

For a referral to a gastroenterologist on staff at Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake, call our physician referral line at 866-764-3627. To schedule your colonoscopy call 214-324-6220.

* $7.99 retail value. This test does not replace a colonoscopy. It serves as a preliminary screening designed to detect warning signs of colorectal cancer.
