Volunteer Opportunities

If you insist on measuring yourself,
place the tape around your heart,
rather than your head.

Doctors Hospital has a group of volunteers with very big hearts. They contribute in many ways that directly impact our patients, family members and staff. In 2008, over 140 volunteers served our hospital in the following ways:

Patient Care
Volunteers in patient care areas provide support for nursing staff through specific patient care duties, transport and delivery of patients and clerical support of nursing and supervisory staff.

Administrative-Clerical
Volunteers provide administrative and clerical support to hospital staff in non-patient areas, including filing, copying, data entry, mail processing and distribution, bulk mailings, telephone and reception duties and file maintenance.

Patient Support
Helping our staff address the social and spiritual needs of patients, these volunteers serve in three unique programs: Pastoral Care, Healing Hearts and Patient Visitors, our “Sunshine Brigade." These volunteers visit patients based on their special needs – spiritual comfort, reassurance about pending heart procedures or just a friendly social visit and a good book to read.

Patient Information
These volunteers serve as a “Information Central” to hospital visitors who are asking about patient location, directions to hospital departments, visiting hours, discharged patients, and much more.  Posted at various stations throughout the hospital, they are often the first friendly face that visitors see when entering the building.  Ambassadors, the partners of our Patient Information volunteers, escort visitors to any location in the hospital.  Together, these are the “crown jewels” of our Doctors Hospital Signature Service.

Special Projects
Many of our volunteers have a special interest or skill that they share with patients and staff. These volunteers may be crafting groups that create tray favors for patients, sewing groups that make teddy bears for our younger patients or comfort pillows for our cancer patients, database design experts or those who can create newsletters for hospital departments.

Volunteers share from their hearts and in so doing, they add a special layer of caring and friendliness to our hospital.  Come and join this exceptional group of people!  Contact LouAnne Smith, Volunteer Coordinator at 214-324-6497 or email her at louanne.smith@tenethealth.com.
